ABOUT FIRST®
FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a global nonprofit organization founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen. Its mission is to provide life-changing robotics programs that equip young people with the skills, confidence, and resilience to build a better world.
The Robotics Competition (FRC) is the organization’s flagship program, offering high school students a challenging platform to develop engineering skills, leadership, collaboration, and project management.
Each year, over 3,000 teams worldwide, ranging from fewer than ten to more than one hundred members, design and build robots to compete in a game unveiled at the start of the season. Guided by adult mentors, these teams have six weeks to construct a robot capable of performing specific tasks, such as scoring game pieces or balancing on field elements.
The annual competition not only emphasizes technical proficiency but also fosters a culture of “Gracious Professionalism” and “Coopertition,” encouraging empathy, respect, and mutual assistance among teams. Through FRC, students gain hands-on experience in STEM fields, preparing them to become future innovators and leaders.
